ESCAPE FROM DEATH.

Working on u slip clearance in the \Vaioeka Gorge on Monday, a Public Works Department employee had a fortunate escape from death. He was the driver of a truck which had just been lilled with spoil from a slip and »vas about to drive the vehicle off to a dump when a look-out, whose duty it was to watch the hillside above the road, gave warning of a further fail of debris. The lorry driver left his scat and reached a place of safety a few moments before a huge boulder crashed down upon the steel hood of the vehicle', smashing its way through the top' and coming to rest upon the driver's seat. The incident was witnessed by a number of travellers who were held up on the road during the clearing of the slips.
