CONSTABLE SUPPORTED.
DETENTION OF MAN. COMMISSIONER SPEAKS. MAY BE CIVIL ACTION. [By Telegraph.-—.fress Association] CHRIST CHURCH, Dec. 23. In connection with the Chnstchurch incident last September, when a tailor, Mr. F. Tlickinbotham, was detained by a constable in his own shop as a suspected burglar, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Cummings, slates that the matter has been thoroughly investigated and the conclusion reached thai the constable acted honestly in the course of his duty. "Up to the present time," added the Commissioner, "Mr. Uickinbotham has not yet given us his version of the incident, although he has made statements to the Press on more than one occasion. Our request lias been made twice." Mr. Cummings mentioned that the constable, who was a probationer at the time of the incident, had since been appointed to the permanent staff. The Commissioner was not pnpm'ed <o discuss the matter' further in new of contemplated civil action against the constable by the complainant.
