LONGER FUNNELS.

AWATEA BACK AGAIN. TURBINE GEARS REPLACED. WORK DONE IN SYDNEY.

[By Telegraph. —Press Association] AUCKLAND, Aug. 3. With her funnels 6ft. Bin. longer and two turbine gears replaced, the Tasnian liner Awatea berthed about mid-day today from Sydney, having been in Cockatoo Island dock, Sydney, since the end of May. On her way across the liucr met northerly winds and beam seas. Captain Davey said that with the former funnels on such a trip the Awatea would have experienced smoke and gmuts in the after-part of the vessel. However, the lengthening of the funnels had completely eradicated the smoke nuisance.

On her trial runs in Australia the Awatea averaged 23 knots, but it would take some time for the replaced turbines to "run in," said the captain.
