DEFEAT IN AMERICA.
"ROMANI WENT TOO FASTI"
(By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 30.
In an interview after bis arrival .his morning, J. E. Lovelock said his track career was definitely closed. He might attend the Empire Games at Sydney in 1938, but not as a competitor. • Lovelock was modest and unassuming, and it was difficult to get him to talk of his achievements. He said conditions were excellent when he made his last appearanco at Princeton University. He felt luite well, adding generously: "But Romani went too fast. He is good and will be better. It was just that he went a bit faster than I did." Commenting on the Olympic Gaines Lovelock said he thought they wero getting too big and too serious, and
:here Avas too much show, with a tendency for the games to get out of hand. Each nation was trying to outdo the other nations. His felloAv-New Zealanders had lone well at the Games, but had not efficient time to get ready. Tho .hing that counted most was big experience in the modern running world. Events were now a battle of tactics and nerves. . All moves were carefully planned and rapidly workad out. His opinion was that a good <?rass track was just as fast as a binder track, but a good grass track was rare.
