Looking the picture of athletic fitness, J. E. Lovelock, the famous New Zealand athlete, arrived by the Monterey this morning. He was welcomed aboard the ship by a representative gathering, including Mr. H. McCormick, representing the Olympic Council, and Mr. F. B. Dwyer, of the Internal Affairs Department. Replying to speeches, Lovelock said he had been very proud to run in New Zealand's colours, and was glad of anything he had been able to do to increase the prestige of his country. He said his plans were indefinite, but he would have to return to England quickly to continue bis medical studies.

Later in the day at the City Council Chambers, an enthusiastic welcome was accorded the champion at a civic reception.

Civic Reception

The civic reception was largely attended, Lovelock being given a great i-eception. Speakers were the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, and the Hon. B. Martin, representing the Govenmeut, Mr. McCormick (Athletic Associa* tion), Mr. W. R. Fee (sports bodies), Mr. T. U. Wells (University), and Dr. Milsom (British Medical Association). The addresses were congratulatory, referring to Lovelock's great achievements in world athletics.

Lovelock briefly returned thanks for the wonderful welcome in Auckland.
