RELIEF LABOUR.
APPEAL TO MINISTER. MR. THORN'S TELEGRAM. In view oL' the extent of the flood damage, the Mayor, .Air. S. Ensor, and the Borough Commissioner, .Mr. C. E. Grange, last evening 'approached Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., for his support in obtaining Government assistanee. This morning Mr. Thorn sent the following telegram to the Minister for Employment, .Mr. 11. T. Armstrong, at Auckland:— "Saturday's terrific storm has done serious damage to Thames Borough. In northern portion of town many shops and residences Hooded and streets deeply covered with mud and debris by overflow from Karaka Stream. Storm-water and sanitary drains seriously choked. Water race broken down badly at one point and two bridges rendered unsafe. "Mr. Ensor, Mayor, and Mr. Orange, Commissioner, have assured mo that if all relief workers can be employed it will take fortnight to (dean up, bridges omitted. Borough wishes you to authorise constant employment all available relief workers at relief rates until clearance of streets, drains and water race effected, the Borough to subsidise at rate of 2/- a day.
'•Also request that 15 fishermen now workless be allowed register immediately to participate in rectifying damage. 1 strongly urge you in llO'i'Oe."
