SWING TO LABOUR.

COUNTRY CONSTITUENCIES. Three Ministers Out. THE PRELIMINARY COUNTS. CONSIDERABLE VOTE-SPLITTING. A feature of the returns was the swing to Labour in the country constituencies, in three of which members of the Cabinet went down to their Labour opponents. These were Hamilton, Tauranga and Waitaki, where Sir A; Young (Minister foi Internal Affairs), and Messrs. Macmillan (Minister for Mines and Agriculture) and Bitchener (Minister for Public Works), respectively, were rejected. Thames went Labour and returned Mr. J. Thorn in preference to its former member, Mr. A. M. Samuel, who this time stood as an Independent. The Democrat, Mr. P. Keegan, forfeits his deposit, as is the case with a good many other candidates. The sole representative of the Country Party, Mr. Rushworth, retained the Bay of Islands seat, while the strength of the Independents remains the same at seven.

The Democrats failed to gain a single spat, their deputy-leader, Mr. Vcit'Ch, losing his scat for Wanganui to a Labourite, while the leader, Mr. Hislop, was bottom of the poll for Masterton. The party was responsible for a considerable amount of vote-splitting to Labour’s advantage
