A SWEEPING VICTORY.
MANY GAINS IN COUNTRY. STATE OF THE PARTIES. GOVERNMENT’S HEAVY LOSSES. A sweeping victory was recorded by the Labour Party in the general parliamentary election yesterday, the National Government suffering one of the heaviest defeats that has yet befallen any Government in the history of the Dominion. The political landslide in favour of Labour was reminiscent of the result of the 1928 election, when the United Party swept into power at the expense of the Reform Government.
The state of the parties in the new House will be (former numbers in parentheses): —Labour, 52 (24) ; National, 20 (46); Independents, 7 (7); Country Party, 1 (1).
