MEETING OF THAMES COUNCIL. REPORT FOR THE MONTH. QUESTION OF WAGES INCREASE. The Thames School of Mines Council met last night. Present: Messrs. C. S. Donovan (president), J. Smith, S. Smith, P. L. Jenkin, C. L. Grange, J. H. Adams, L. Judd and J. R, Muir. The director, Mr. H. Crawford, A.0.5.M., and the secretary, Mr. W. S. Clark, were also present. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. H. Lowe and A. Steedman.

Mr. Donovan briefly welcomed Mr. L. Judd to the Council in place of the late Mr. J. B, Judd.

Mr. Judd thanked'the Council for its invitation to fill the vacancy which he would endeavour to occupy with the same success as his uncle.

The Mines Department advised, in reply to the Council's letter, that inquiries were being made whether the 5 per cent, increase in salaries and wages was to apply to tho School of Mines, and if so, whether the subsidy payable to the Department was to be raised to meet tho increase.

Members were of the opinion that if word was not received from the Department within a fortnight tho secretary should further communicate. Certain expenditure on the purchase of experimental plant, and on repairs to the existing plant, were outlined and authorised in a letter from the Mines Department. Director's Report. The director reported that for tho month 30 loads.,had been treated in the battery for a return" of 1270z5. Bdwts., valued at £509/9/6. Gold and silver assays totalling 261 had been carried out.. Two parcels each of 3 tons were treated in the prospectors' mill for a return of 9ozs. 12dwts., valued at £46/3/6. It appeared that the treatment plant was going to be fully occupied until Christmas,Finance. Accounts totalling £26/0/8 were passed for payment, and a credit balance of £BB shown at the bank.
