Cellulose From Flax.
INTERESTING EXPERIMENTS. SHIPMENTS TO EUROPE. Considerable interest centres around the shipment of green flax taken by the Opawa recently to Europe. The flax is a trial shipment for experimental purposes and will be treated in Sweden with a view to extracting cellulose from it. During the voyage the flax will be kept at a low temperature in the vessel’s cooling chambers. This shipment, the first of its kind, has been made by one of the flax companies, which has sent with it its own chemist. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research is also experimenting along the same lines and is sending Home four different kinds of green flax in order to ascertain which- 1 is best for the making of cellulose. If it. is found that cellulose of a high quality can be manufactured from New Zealand flax, phormium tenax, at a reasonable price, the flax industry stands to come into its own again. As all the cellulose experts and merchants reside in Europe it is necessary to send the flax there in order to get an expert opinion on its possibilities. . a
