Chilled Beef Trade.
AUSTRALIAN DEVELOPMENT. EQUIPPING ORIENT LINERS. Shipping companies trading to Australia are watching with interest the development of the chilled meat trade, and are keeping in close touch with Australian and overseas experts. The Orient Line is proposing to extend the accommodation for chilled beef on the liners at present in the Australian running. The Orama and the Otranto are now fitted with special gas-tight chambers, and it is understood that several other Orient ships will be so equipped. The liner Orion, now being built in England, will have a whole deck for chilled beef transport. The first shipment of chilled beef from the Moreton- (Queensland) Works of Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons, Australia, Ltd., was made on August 31 on the Commonwealth and Dominion liner, Port Alma, one of the latest steamers to he equipped with a chilling chamber. It is stated that intends to exploit the new trade to the fullest extent possible. Swift Australian Co., Ltd., may acquire the Gladstone (Queensland) meatworks. Negotiations have been proceeding for some time and may be completed at the end of this month.
