TWO MEN ADRIFT.
CARRIED OUT TO SEA. Aucklanders’ Experience. NO FOOD OR WATER. » " EIGHTEEN HOURS' ORDEAL. (By Telegrapn.—Press Association). WHAKATANE, Sept. 18. Two men had an extraordinary experience when they were washed out to sea from the Tarawera River at midnight on Saturday in a 9ft. flatbottomed boat. The boat had no oars and only a ti-tree pole, and drifted helplessly about for 18 hours in a calm sea. Robert Lamb, aged 50 years, and James Holden, aged 21, both of Auckland, endeavoured to cross the river to light beacons to guide a scow to port. They were carried over the bar and drifted seven miles to near the Ruruma Islands, then up the coast in the vicinity of Plate Island. Finally, the tide again turned and carried them near the shore. With the aid of a seat for a paddle they reached the beach 14 miles from their starting point. The men were without food or water but are none the worse for their unenviable experience.
