Dearer Grass Seed.
SHARP RISE IN PRICES. SHORTAGE OF SUPPLIES, AMERICAN DROUGHT EFFECT. Prices for most grass seed in New Zealand have risen steeply, and one quotation has doubled itself in recent weeks. It is also possible that England and Europe will turn to New Zealand for supplies of some seeds, particularly ryegrass. Up to the present the United States of America have exported large amounts of timothy grass seed to New Zealand, but the drought conditions there have caused a very short supply and the price has doubled itself 'during the last few weeks. It is freely rumoured that America is even endeavouring to buy back at double her own export prico some of the seed which she earlier exported to New Zealand. There will be a decidedly short supply of timothy grass this spring and autumn, and those who insist on obtaining that particular seed will have to pay a price' for it. If New Zealand is called upon to export any seed it'will probably bo Italian ryegrass ' drawn from Canterbury. The prices for chewings fescue and crested dogstail have also advanced considerably, owing to both the short supply and the possibility of export. Cooksfoot, too, has increased in price, but this is due solely to the shortage of supply.
