THE THAMES BOARD

AUGUST ACTIVITIES. The Thames Hai hour Board met last evening. Present: Messrs H. Lowe (chairman), R. Coulter, 11. 11. Hicks, J. 11. Elisor, W. C. Kennedy, E. Edwards, J. McCormick, J. Brown, and the secretary, Mr J. M. Fox.

Foreshore Claims

Mr W. White wrote in regard to his claim of 5£ acres on the foreshore tihat no work was being done at present and lie had obtained protection for six months as from June 1. Mr E. F. Adams’ report was very favourable and he was endeavouring to raise capital to recommence work. As soon as he was able be would complete the new bond and would ask the. Board to take no action in the meantime He offered to pay half the lega' costs debited against him by the Board. It was decided to accept the offer provided the new bond was completed before operations were recommenced.

P. W. Howe notified' regarding operations on bis beach claim of 194 acres on the Tararu foreshore that two men had been engaged in .sinking holes "and taking samples from the area. The surface and lower depths were being treated separately wihich took time. Close on forty samples had been tested at the School of Mines and another lot sdnt away for verification by another assayer, but the result was not yet to hand. As soon as this was known be intended sinking deeper to test layers below 4ft, for which preparations were being made. All work was necessarily slow to ensure greatest accuracy. The letter was received.

Miscellaneous Matters

Correspondence was read in regard to matters relating to the liquidation of the Moanataiari Gold Mining Company and consideration deferred.

The application of the Northern Steamship 'Co., Ltd., for a 20 per cent, reduction under the provisions of the National Expenditure Adjustment Act, 1932, in the rental of sheds and office at Burke Street

wharf was granted. The Thames Boys’ Welfare Committee wrote requesting the Board to endeavour to make provision for employing a boy now attending school in the office at a nominal wage of a few shillings a week for the benefit of experience.

Members expressed their full sympathy with the 'Committee’s efforts on behalf of unemployed boys, but regretted that it was impossib’e .under the prevailing conditions to accede to.the request. It was resolved that an additional 10 per cent, penalty be imposed on all rates unpaid after September 28.

Finance. The secretary reported receipts for August as follows: Wharfage, etc., £282/13/9; rates, £l5B/10/6; total, £441/4/3. The bank balance at August 31 was: Dr., £2003/3/6. Accounts amounting to £382/16/8 were passed for payment.
