OLDEST PRACTISING SOLICITOR.

The distinction of being the Dominion’s oldest practising solicitor was stated in a recent issue of a city paper as belonging to Mr. R. Clinton Hughes of New Plymouth.

Mr. Hughes replied that while appreciating the compliment intended, he has to disclaim a distinction which properly belongs to Mr. George Harper, of Christchurch, who himself told Mr. Hughes on the occasion of the first solicitors’ conference (1928), that he was an English barrister before' he came to New Zealand, and that he was admitted a barrister and solicitor cf the Supreme Court of this colony in June, 1870. Mr. Hughes’s own admission took place in September of that year.
