WHANGAMATA

The work of building the new steamer wharf at Whangamata is now in hand and is being pushed on with all possible speed. The new structure, which is being built under the direction of the Public Works Department, will extend about forty feet beyond the present one, and will fulfill a long-felt want. It is now over three years since the local ratepayers carried a poll, for the raising, of a loan to assist with the erection of a new wharf. Owing to many unforseen delays, however, the construction has been postponed on various; occasions. The old wharf, which has served the district for many years, was built purely by the voluntary labour of the settlers themselves, and was always more or less regarded in the light of a temporary expedient. It has been frequently patched up and is in a very bad state of repair. The new wharf when completed will certainly be a great boon, as not only will goods be landed easily and safely, but vessels will not be so dependent on the state of the tide as heretoforei
