OBITUARY.

L. A. WATKINS, M.A

After bearing no with great heart for some month,?, Mr. Leslie Arthur Watkins, M.A., passed away last evening at the Thames Hospital. Mr. Watkins has been a popular teacher of the Thames High School for the last five, years and will be greatly missed at the tsehool where he was a very capable conscientious teacher and Lieutenant of the Cadets. Mr. Watkins was born in Ponsonby, Auckland, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Watkins, Momona Read, Green Lane, Auckland. He received his primary education at the* Richmond Read School under Mr. T. U. Wells, M.A. Afterwards he attended the Auckland Grammar School. He became a pupil teacher in the Richmond Road School and later became a student of the Auckland Training College and the Auckland University where he gained the degree of R.A. at the early 1 age of nineteen, ffe entered camp during the latter stages of the war and contracted a chill in Egypt which laid the foundation of the trouble to which he succumbed. At the end of the War he resumed teaching, being for some time head of the secondary department of the Matamata High School. £ Mr. Watkins married Miss Mar jorie Whitaker, of Hamilton, and is survived by her and a son. aged six, also by his father and mother and two brother??. A member from boyhood of the Methodist Church, he was very popular with the young people of - the Sunday School, being tb° leader of the Young Men’s Bible Class.

H. ASHBY There passed away yapterday at liis late residence, Devon Street, Wailii. Mr. H. (Harry) Ashby at the age of 56. Mr. Ashbv was born at Thames and after leaving school joined his father in the carting business. Many year.s ago he went -to* Waihi and was employed carting for the Wailii Gold Mining Company. He has been in ill-health for about 12 months and the la/vfc month or so became weaker, passing away yesterday.

He is survived by bis widow, who was Miss Redwood, of Thames, three sons and two daughters.
