PUBLIC OPINION.

APPRECIATION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir.—The committee of the Hauraki Ladies’ Benevolent Society, desires to express sincere thanks to the large number of sympathetic friends who kindly sent gifts of money, fuel, clothing, provisions, etc., in teepon.se to the appeal recently made on behalf of those in need.

The officers and members of the Salvation Army heartily co-operated with us, and we particularly appreciated the interest taken l>v the members of the Rotary Club, who initiated the movement, and were mainly responsible for its success. The response was most generous, and with the assistance of the Government subsidy, we were able to help many who were in real need. It may be of interest to your readers to know that the ladies of the Benevolent Society carry on this good work all the year round, and that all donations of money'i are subsidised by the Government to the extent of 24/- for every £1 given.

I am etc., A. MILLER, President, H.L.B.S.
