REPORT FROM ENGINEER.

NO BIDS FOR THE QUARRY. HAWTHORNE MUST BE CUT. The Borough Engineer (Mr. J. E. Anderson) reported on Borough works last evening ns follows: Water Supply. Loan Works.—No. 1 Section: Some timber repairs have been carried out to the fhiming across Ivaraka Creek end and to Hudson's tunnel. No. 2 Sectichi: The levelling up and general overhaul of the Skull Point section has now been completed, leaving this -section in very good order. Maintenance.—No. 1 Section : The clearing of gorse, blackberry, and other noxious weeds is occupying all the time that can he given to it.. No. 2 Section: The clearing of noxious weeks is being proceeded with, as well as the general maintenance work of small repairs-'and attention to intakes.

Domestic.---A considerable number of leaks have been attended to. During the storm on the 28th ult. the motor operating the new reservoir pump was seriously burnt out, as reported by the electrical engineer. The motor from the Waikiekie pump was brought in to replace it. 1 would point out that the restoration of the second motor is a matter of urgency. General.—l have been notified by Messrs. Stewart and Lloyd, of Wellington, that the material lor the Tararu extension main lias been ordered by cable. Since last meeting a small supply of the din. x din. glazed white tiles has come to hand, and the positions oi fire-hydrants are being marked by them as instructed, and as opportunity occurs. Roads and Streets. Maintenance. —Footpaths and steps in Albert Street have been repaired, also the culvert and drains on the Moanataiari ltoad. Lower Sealey Street has been reconditioned by scarifying and grading. The reconditioning ot Mackay Street has now been completed from Sealey Street to Richmond Street. Surface repairs have been made on the Main Highway from Burke Street to Fishing Rocks. The portable crusher is now at work breaking up the rock recovered from the last sewerage contract. Since lastmeeting a 4101 b. cask of Laykold, costing £2/5/7 f.o.b. Auckland, lias arrived, and early opportunity will be tiiKti' to repair holes in existing bitumen surfaces in Pollen and Cochrane Streets. I would also point out that as soon as labour is available, attention will be given to Jellicoe Crescent. For the past week two men have been at work on the Tararu Domain drains under unemployment- relief,. A reminder lias been received from tho Department of Agriculture that we must take measures before the 31st July, to treat hawthorn as required by the Fireblight Act, 1922. Sewerage. For the period 18 permits for sanitary installations have been issued. Quarry. I have so far had no definite inquiries re the taking over of the plant on a royalty basis. Cr. Cropp pointed out that a lot of hawthorn was growing on the water reserve.

The Engineer said there was not so much on Borough property as he thought. The inspector was notifying private people. Cr. Bryan would like the Engineer to go into the matter of totally eradicating the hawthorn.
