DRAINS FOR HORAHIA.

A PROGRESSIVE BOARD. £14,000 SCHEME PROPOSED. RATEPAYERS TO DECIDE. r Some months ago the necessity was stressed at length in these columns for an extensive overhauling of the system of drainage enjoyed by the settlers with the Horahia Drainage Board’s area. The Board lias bad the matter under consideration for some time, and, after drawing up a scheme in the rough, based on expert advice, employed Mr. J. W. Anderson. Assistant Engineer to the Hauraki Plains County Council, to estimate the costs, and generally bring down a finished scheme for the favourable consideration of ratepayers. This work is now completed, and the proposals involve a total expenditure of £14,000, which the ratepayers will bp asked to pass in due course. The Engineer has divided the area into 31 sections, each of which is served by an outlet drain. Details of the proposals are here given in summarised form as follows: Area No. 1 is that portion of the Horahia area on the south side of the Kerepeehi-Wharepoa road, between the river and the eastern boundary of section 5. There are 364 acres, served by a racecourse drain. The cost is £3l Area No. 2 is a small area of 192 acres at Kerepeehi, and it drains into the stopbank drain and out at the floodgate on the southern boundary of Price’s farm. No work is required there. Area No. 3 is one of the most diffi cult sections under the Board’s jurisdiction, and in order to make a satisfactory job of it, the expenditure necessary will be a considerable amount. Total cost £1915 Area No. 4 includes 266 acres against the Pialio River which will drain out through the new floodgate at teh back of James’ section. No work is required in this section. Area No. 5 is the area drained by the Macduff-Louch boundary drain, which is 605 acres in extent. There are 205 chains of road drain to oe re-graded. '-Total cost ... £572/1/6

AreliTNo. 6 is a small area of 83 acres. No work is required here. Area No. 7 is that area of 301 acres draining into the drain on the south side of Orchard East road. A flap is required at Parry’s corner to prevent water from the country coming down the drain. Areas 18 and 19 are the most diffi cult areas under the Board’s jurisdiction. There are 1465 acres to drain, and all the water has to bo taken to the two floodgates at the mouth of the Factory drain. There are 144 chains of drain on the Pipiroa-Orongo road, and 117 chains on the Shelly Beach road and across Miller’s, which will have to be improved and re-graded, and 75 chains of the Factory drain will have to be opened out. Ttotal cost £2BO Area No. 20 is a small area of 160 acres that drains out the Orongo outlet. No work, is required in this area. Area No. 21 is 224 acres in extent, and ise served by the ou.etlet at the southern end of the Orongo estate. Total cost ... £145/16/8 Area No. 22 is 350 acres, and is served by Ngataipua road drains. Total cost £5 Area No. 23 is 390 acres in extent, and the existing drain will have to he re-graded into the proposed new drain across Tvaipapaka.
