RUA’S SON DIES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WHAKATANE, Oct. 22. Henere Rua, the 15-year-old son of the well-known native of the Urewera country, died on Tuesday as. the result of a shooting accident at Matahi, which occurred a month ago. With two other boys, young Rua was practising shooting with a Winchester repeater. A cartridge jammed in the rifle, and he placed the point of the rifle against his thigh and hammered the cartridge with a stone. The cartridge exploded and the bullet entered his thigh. Rua was taken to the Opotiki Hospital, where he died as the result of blood poisoning.

A NARROW ESCAPE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Oct. 22. Thomas Treloar, aged 19, a resident of Sawyer’s Bay, had a narrow escape .from death at the mouth of Blanket Bay tunnel yesterday. He had been at a dance sin Ravensbourne and was returning home when he fell asleep by the railway line. The early morning ti'ain from Dunedin to Palmersto, though strongly braked on the driver sighting him, struck him, causing broken ribs and a bruised side.

A HORSE KILLED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 22. As the first express from Wellington to Auckland was passing through Wiri Station yesterday morning at about six o’clock it ran into a horse and cart. The animal was killed outright and the cart smashed to matchwood. The horse was standing in the station yard when the express was approaching. The animal evidently took fright at the noise made by the train and dashed over the crossing. The driver, a man named Tooley, had left the vehicle a few moments before the accident. The Main Trunk was delayed about * three minutes and arrived in Auckland on time.

MAN RUN OVER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 22. Robert Curry, aged 25, single, was accidentally killed at the Cornwall Street level crossing this morning. He was struck by a train arriving from Wellington, and never regained consciousness.
