The uproar was led by a woman with a shrill voice, and the candidate was subjected to ..coiitinuous interruptions throughout her address, and at question time thundering voices tried to make speeches in reply to the candidate’s answers. ' A vote of no-confidence was moved “owing to the candidate’s lack of political knowledge,” and an amendment of thanks and confidence was carried by the candidate’s friends, who were in good force, while her opponents .cheered the Labour candidate and sang “For he’s a jolly good fellow.” -A«-GOQDt' RECEPTION. ACCORDED TO MR. COATES. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WHANGAREI, Oct. 21. A rousing reception was extended the Prime Minister at the Whangarei Town Hall last night, bv a full-capacity audience of 1300 people. Mr. Coates recapitulated the policy and programme previously enunciated, its keynote being “Equal opportunity to all the people of New Zealand.” Its reforms and aims included the stability of finance, .an assured future for the country, decent living conditions, decent working hours, and decent housing conditions. The State could and would cany out enterprises such as railways, hydro-electricity, land drainage, etc., better than private indWcKHlls’ could, but could not take ..every company from the cradle up, find tell it what to do. It was impossible for any Party to carry on development in New Zealand .except’ through continued State borrowing. / He surged North Aucklanders to take •advantage of electricity from the Arapuni source, and hoped there would be .enough demand by 1928 to warrant the northern extension of the scheme. Reduction in taxation accomplished by the Reform Government, advances to settlers, land settlement, immigration, defence, and education were specially featured. A vote of thanks and confidence was enthusiastically carried, the whole •audience rising and cheering.
