BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. WARNING AGAINST SHELL-FISH. The Borough Council met last evening. Present: His AVorship the Mayor (Mr T. W. Rhodes, M.P.), Crs. E. N. Miller, J. Hardman, J. Morley, AChristie and J. Alien. Cases of Typhoid. The Medical Officer of Health, Auckland, wrote that three Maori cases were notified on the 12th inst., as suffering from typhoid fever. Investigations found that the probable source of infection was from eating shell-fish obtained from the foreshore in the neighbourhood of the drainage discharge. He had written to the Harbour Board, asking them to have notices printed in English and Maori, put up on either side of the sewer outfall, warning people of the, danger of eating shell-fish gathered from the flats in this neighbourhood, and would be glad if the Council would co-operate in this connection. Instructions had been given to erect notices at the discharge of the Noke Noke conduit, and also at the District Homes foreshore at Tararu. Holidays Wanted. The sanitary staff asked for annual leave to be granted to them. The Mayor said these did not belong to the permanent staff, and if they started giving holidays where were they going to end. •Cr Morley moved that the men be granted a holiday on full pay. Cr Christie seconded. Cr Morley asked if these men came under an award. There should be some holiday given them. Cr Miller thought it ought to be referred to a committee and the assistant engineer to report. Cr Hardman moved that it be referred to the sanitation committee and the assistant engineer to report. C l r Morley thought it ought to be dealt with at once.
The Mayor thought they ought to go fully into the matter before deciding. Cr Miller seconded. The voting was equal, and the Mayor gave his casting vote in favour of the amendment, which was declared carried. Request for License. Mr T. .1. Baker applied for a license for a billiard-room in Pollen Street. The police approved of the license being granted. The application was granted. Trotting Meeting. An application was received from the Trotting Club for the tralfic route for their meeting on April 4th. be fixed. Cr Bush moved that this be referred to the engineer with power to act. This was seconded and carried.
