BOOKMAKER FINED (Press Association). AUCKLAND,SEP. 12 At the Police Court, Loftus Richaged 54, was fined £2OO on the charge of loitering in the streets for the purposes of betting. It was stated that after his arrest 41 double charts and £43 were found in his possession. The Magistrate said he was satisfied Richards was there for the purposes of betting, and the material found clearly showed that he was a bookmaker. He was quite satisfied that the charge was proved. OPIUM The Chinaman, Ah A un,who was recently fined £3O, for having opium in his possession, was arrested last night on a similar charge. At the Court today, he was fined £3O. When arrested he tried to throw away a jar of opium. FAILING TO DECLARE A young man named Robert Knowles a recent arrival from ’Frisco,was fined £2o,for failing to declare a typewriter silk hosiery valued £lO and six new trunks valued at £37. A charge of smuggling was withdrawn.
