HOUSING PROBLEM.
SCHEME THAT FAILED. GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES CURTAILED. (Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 18. The Prime Minister announced yesterday that the housing branch of the Labour Department would be closed dowoi immediately as the results had not justified expectations. This, however, did not mean that the Government was going out of tho business of providing-"" 7 homes for tho people. The workers’ dwelling scheme remained in existence, and would bo administered by the Labour Department. Tho Advances to Workers branch would a 1 so continue to operate, and the Government was still advancing jnonoy tc local bodies, within the prescribed limits, and may be able presently to increase the advances. Tho attempt to solve the housing problem by the direct efforts oi Government officials was being abandoned.
