THE RAILWAYS.
STEADY TRAFFIC. The returns for the railway passenger traffic locally show that over 1 the Christmas Holidays 1000 people' took tickets from Thames. This figure, it is understood, shows a slight increaso on last gear’s total. Ona thing very noticeable in the booking this, season is that the majority of the passengers are not gping very far.' Inter-island booking, for instance, has decreased,; and the number of'travellers'going any. distance has fallen away considerably. The traffic, both outward and inward, has been handled expeditiously. j- The inward traffic has been! heavy, and when tho 1 figures ore available should show an increase upon those of last year.
