SWIMMING.

THE SEASON OPENED. The swimming season was opened with a carnival last Monday evening. It had been postponed on two previous occasions, which , militated against 'its success. However, some good contests were witnessed, the scratch men just winning by a touch in three events. Although good entries had been received, the number of .starters was poor. This is very I discouraging to the officials, who put in a "lot of work for which they get no. thanks.

Mr D. Brown should prove an acquisition to the club. ' Messrs J. W. Danby and Hardwiek kindly donated trophies for the;car- : nival. : Mr J. NOTES. Mr Moss Ballin has been appointed manager of the New Zealand tour of Kealoha, the Hawaian swimmer, who is to arrive in New Zealand about the end of the present month.

** The Victorian Swimming Association is expecting a very successful season. They have Australian champion Ivan Stedman, who will probr ably represent them in the championships of Australia, both in free style and breast-stroke events. The Victorians are also expecting great re- . suits-, from Hans Robertson, who, as junior champion,, showed excellent promise of making an Australian champion. Most of Sydney champion swimmers are fast approaching their form. Prank Beaurepaire is swimming splendidly, and, despite his age, is full of vim and vitality. If anything, he looks better than last year. Mrs Gateley (Miss Fanny Durack) has started to swim with her old ' club, and, although retaining some of her old dash, it is unlikely that she will regain the form that enabled j her to win the world's championship. Unless she picks up considerably, '•' she is not likely to contest, championship events. Weismuller, the new American . star swimmer, has broken another record. Weismuller, who is only lj" years of age, recently created a sensation by putting up record times in . free style, and by defeating Norman Ross and Ludy Langer in the Na-' tional 220yds Championship. Not* this wonder has eclipsed all backstroke records by covering 100yds in the remarkable time of lmin 7 2 r ssec. The previous best was lmin Bsec, by > Warren Kealoha, cousin to Pua Kealoha.
