CRICKET.

JOTTINGS.

The match against School of Mines gave Brokenshire quite an outing with bat and ball. He made his-runs when they were sorely needed, and put his side into a winning position. For the losers, Gleeson batted with his usual soundness, and, with L. Hook, who made a splendid start .in-. senior cricket, looked time. ■■■=-.c'>i '.-~ ; ..'>s^-ft;X: ! .'■'..-,. ■.'■*:.;;; The catch field with which G. innings was a piece of work as has been seen for some time. Racing in, he took the ball low down, and held it. Some great figures in bowling in High School cricket in Sydney are recorded by last week's Sun. They

record that Gill, of Chatswood, dismissed six for two -run/,, his feat including the hat frick. Gill is a lefthand fast bowler, with a slight legbreak. Gill's performance was dupli- ( eated by Duncan, of Randwiek, who also took six for two. Ward, of Randwiek seconds, accounted for four wickets at the cost of only one run, and Storey, of Randwiek thirds, went one better by taking five for one run. Christchureh cricketers organised a cricketers' fete on Saturday week in Hagley Park, and had a most successful time there. The chief purpose of the fete was to raise funds for the advancement of cricket among the boys, by providing for the payment of the coach who has already done so much good work 'among them, and, if possible, engaging an additional coach, by improving the condition of the ground, by supplying means for its adequate upkeep. It is a move decidedly in the right direction, and might with advantage be followed by all other centres.

The following cricket team has been selected to represent Te Aroha v. Manawaru, at Manawaru: —Rev. Ryburn, J. N. Wood, C. Laver, P. T. Halligari, J. Harris, V. James, A. H. Whatford, A. G. Clements, H. Smith, A. Forrest, and ,C. Parsons. Some hitting! Playing in a -weekend match at French's Forest, for Willoughby, against a* Brookvale team, L. Stehning knocked up 112 runs nine sixes, 13 fours, one two, and four singles in four overs. "Warwick Armstrong states that South Africa cannot hope to compete with Australia and England until they play on turf wickets. The £10,386 at the first Test in Sydney last season is still the record gate for international cricket. C. Kelleway, the Australian representative, is bowling well for Glebe in Sydney cricket this season. Against Balmain he. notched seven for 49 in.l6 overs. f ~\ Otago will visit 'Auckland this season. December 31, January 2 and 3 are set down. Has anybody ever heard* of a batsman catching himself out? This is what happened to R. D. Lee, in Sydney, recently. He hit the ball into, the air, and caught it himself, and was given out for obstructing the field. A feature of the South African play has. been the success of the colts in test matches. It is very promising for the future of the game in the sister Dominion. A few notes on some members of the Otago team:— 1 T. Carlton (Albion captain).— Learned his cricket in Melbourne, but has been, in New Zealand -for some l y«ar|^ad^^c:i«pre^4^-^^ er " : ;irory' tained the team. Is a consistently good left-hand -round-the-wieket bowler, and a fair bat. L. Casey (Dunedin).— 'Fast bowler, and, on his day, a good one. Can make runs on occasions by forceful strokes. Has represented his province on several occasions. x H. .Duncan (Carisbrook),— A re-

cent arrival from Auckland. His batting has been sound, while in the* field he is a live wire. His first appearance for Otago. A. Eckhold (Dunedin).—As a batsman of the "rock" order has no equal in local cricket. Notwithstanding his strong defence, he also has some capital shots on the off which reach the boundary. Is a useful change bowler, and a capital field in the country. A. Galland (GsnangeV,—An allrounder; a batsman who makes Bis runs quickly and attractively; a bowler (right hand), who can get -wickets on occasions;, and n fieldsman of the dashing type. His performances in interprovincial contestsare many. -,

J. Shepherd (Albion). —A batsman of. a high order, and his performances in big cricket last season stamp him as one of the finest batsmen in the Dominion. His run-getting has not been prolific in local games, so far this season, but he 7 has consistently secured useful figures. Represented New Zealand and Otago against the Australian team last summer, and came out with an excellent record. Is a good field, and for his club this year has proved a useful bowler. " " . •H. G. Siedeberg (Albion).—A few years ago one of New Zealand's champion all-rounders. Has represented New Zealand and his province on very many occasions. . His form ■with the bat in club matches has placed- him in the very forefront as a run-getter. He is still a very fine cover field, and as a change bowler is more likely to break up a partnership than any man in the team.
