In connection with the closing down of a number of large engineering works there is a feeling among unionises that the employers are taking concerted action. to evade arbitration awards and cut down wages. The employers deny any concerted action in closing down, but claim that high wages, short hours and the low prices at which iron may be imported from Europe make it imperative that there should fto some readjustments oi ; working conditions in Australia to get the, industry back to a more favourable footing..
