NGATEA.

(From Our Travelling Reporter.) FARMERS’ UNION MONTHLY MEETING.

A . meeting of the Ngatea Branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Ngatea Hall on Saturday last. , r; A letter was received from the Auckland, Farmers’ Union Trading Co., to the effect that,' owing to the financial stringency, the company could not at present see its way clear to establish a branch store at 'Ngatea, as requested by the Union. There was some discussion regarding the suggestion that:-the. time was opportune for the establishment of a bakery at Ngatea. ;■ ;

It was resolved that the Union should advertise in a number of papers to the effect that there was a good opening in Ngatea for a bakery, and that those interested should apply to the secretary for further particulars. , The question of the appointment of a veterinary surgeon on the Hauraki Plains was again considered.. It was reported that the Agricultural Department had replied that it was impossible for the Department to statibn a veterinary officer on the Plains.

A member suggested that an association :: should . be formed for the purpose of inducing a veterinary surgeon to practise in the district. After a long discussion, it was decided that the secretary should write to the various branches of the Farmers’ Union on the Plains, asking them to co-operate with the Ngatea branch in forming an association to enable them to have a veterinary surgeon permanently stationed on the Plains.

One member remarked that the Government refused to help them, so they must help themselves, and this was the only way of doing it.

It was mentioned that it would cost from £750 to £IOOO per annum to induce a surgeon to take up prac-

tice here.
