BY ELECTION IN QUEENSLAND.
LABOUR DEFEAT LIKELY
(A. and N. Z, Cable.) (Received 11 a.m.) BRISBANE, August 4. In the Maranoa by-election to fill the vacancy in the Federal House caused by Mr. Page's death,' Mr. Hunter, the Country Party's nominee, has established an apparently unassailable lead over the Labourite candidate.
Labour's defeat is considered significant when taken in conjunction with the latye municipal elections.
