IMPORTANT CONFERENCE. OPENING LAND FOR SETTLEMENT..^ (Press Association). WELLINGTON, August. 3. A highly important conference for the consideration of matters in connection with Urewera lands has Been opened at Ruatoki. Representatives of the,Lands Department and the Native Department are meeting the native owners for the discussion of a scheme put forward By the Government for the consolidation of the Government and thebaative interests in the Urewera block.
Mr. A. Ngata, M.P., is watching the interests of the native owners. » When the Government purchases amounting to some 300,000 acres, have been defined, the 'sub-division of the land for settlement- will be pioceeded with at once. It is intended that the Maori owners of the balance of the Urewera .block shall have their titles defined individually, and ' when, individualised, these lands, will be- liable for the payment of rates on the same basis as European lands.
