WOMAN ARMY DOCTOR
A romance of South Airican history has 'been dramatised, and produced at the St. James' Theatre, London.
The play 'is woven round the history of Dr. James Barry, a woman, who, at the time when Lord Charles Henry Somerset wag Governor at the Ca,pe, served in the army as a surgeon, living all her life as a man. She ended her career <as InspectorGene.ral of 'the Army Medical Forces, and her sex was not discovered until ißhe died in London on 25th Juily, 1885; at pver 60 years of age.
She (fougiht two duels,, and was known as the most skilful of physicians and! the most wayward of men, though with a certain effeminaov of manner, which she wag always striving to overcome.
