On. Thursday •evening at HdlLuai Mr. Purtell, the Labour candidate, lectured to a fairly large aiudiience, and many seemed greatly interested in his ideas.
Rather a peculiar occurrence happene on, the suspension bridge at HJikuaa last evening. A 'boy of 9 years of age 3 crossing;, while, a. horse was also crossing from the opposite direction, took hold of the hand-rail at a joint. The vibration caused by the horse opened tihe joint, in which his finger .slipped. When the horse had passed, the boy "was found fastened to the bridge by the finger, the joint having closed on d* after the weight had passed, there remaining in agony for a considerable time. The fing«r <wa« .released several men causing the bridge to viibrate in the same manner as the travelling of the horse. '" ,
Tupaki is playing havoc among the cattle on, the runs during this month, and 1 a good many "with cattle naming at large are heavy losers.
