Doctor Gilruth, the administrator, has arrived. The strike committe presented their demands. Dr. Gilruth. refused, stating that he had no power to grant them. 'He offered to submit to arbitration, but at a meeting! the men rejected the offer and decided to adhere to the demand for four pounds per week and forty-four hours. The clerical staff is assisting the crew of the steamer Ldnschten to unload the Government cargo.
Young Doo, a Chinese, had a ..mixture of powdered glass and" pepper poured into his eyes in Sydney early one morning last week. It .is believed that it was> an act of revenge by fellow countrymen because Young 1 had given certain information to the police. Young 1 told the police that he was walking along 1 Campbell street at about 3 a.m., when he was attacked; by three other Chinese. one of whom struck, him a heavy blow that knocked him down. He was. held by two of the men, he said, while the third poured the glass and pepper into his eyes. When they released him Young pulled a revolver and fired a shot in the; direction in which the men had gone, but he did not think he hit anyone, as he fired at random. No arrests have yet been made. It is stated that Young 1 has recovered from the effects of his treatment. ■ . i
