CRICKET.

OPENING OF THE SEASON 1902-3

"Better late than never" is an oft quoted proverb which this year is decidedly applicable to this summer pastime, but now that a commence-ment—-and successful commencement at that—has 1 been made it is to be„ hoped that the season will be in no way second to its predecessors. That cricket has numerous*devotees here was every evident from the ■ number present at Parawai despite the counter attraction in town. The senior contest has unfortunately resolved itself into, a duel between Tararu and City South,, and on Saturday's performance it is evident that very little "luck"—so called— will turn the uca'e either way. Each side has completed an innings, and South'.—without its . fujHj strength— has a lead of five runs on the first innings. 'Nor are the junior contests less interesting, Tararu juniors leading but by one run on the result of. the first innings against' City Central, while City iSoutb juniors have •the substantial majority of 16 in their match against County juniors. We hope next week to publish some interesting notes on the various games. Pressure'on, our space meantime compels us to insert only the ba,re scores: — SENIORS. CITY SOUTH V. TARARU I.
