(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 21. S. case of considerable im.poirtance to ooiupanies issuing debentures came before Mr Justice Denniston in banco on Wednesday. Manning and Co., brewers, issued a series of £100 debentures in Ju"y last, and on an in- • flnmra.tjW laidjby the D)e/put|y"-Cb|mr mi-'isioner of Stamps in resp-act of one of such debentures, Mr R, Beetham, S.M., held that such debentures were liable, to stamp duty as promissory notes, and imrjesed a fine of one shilling for a breach of the Stamp Act- : Against t-Tiis decision Manning and Co. appealed, Mr J. B. Fisher appear"i.ng for this appellants, and Mr W. Stringer (Crown Prosecutor) for -the Deptuy-Stamp Commissioner.
