- The Hon. Mr Cadman and Mr Smith, M.H.H., have gone to Makau to inspect the coal mines and'other mineral resources. Both intend to leave shortly for England to lay before capitalists the mineral i-esources of Taranaki.

At Dunedin Charles Brett, a fisherman, .was drowned yesterday by the upsetting of a boat. Deceased was a single man aged 35.

The Hon. J. G. Ward reaches Te Awmuutu to-day and will speak tonight. A presentation is to be made him in recognition of his services in connection with the inauguration of the penny postage.

A fairly good list of nominations have been received by the Waihi Jockey Club.

The S. A. Grant mentioned as having received a lieutenant's commission in the 7th contingent, is a son of Capt. Grunt, so well known on the Thames.

We have received from the American Tobacco Co., Auckland branch, a specimen of the exceedingly well executed olegraph picture which the company mails to all persons who send them 25 Old Judge cigarette boxes, or 12 Old Judge tobacco labels. Only the outside of the boxes is required.

The export of gold from i\cw Zealand for the two months of the present year was:—7s,297ozs, valued at £287,960, or an increase of lS,Bt?3ozß (value £69,102) compared with the first two months of last, year. Durthe last month 48,8790zs of silver, valued at £5227 were exported.

At the Magistrate's Court yesterday H. Gallagher sued C. A. Bishop on a claim for 14s 3d for fish supplied. After evidence had been taken the plaintiff was nonsuited. Mr Bush occupied the Bench.
