THE WAIHI MINERS,
STRIKE AT KARANGAHAKE
THAMES MINERS' UNION
INTERVENES,
To-day Mr W. 11. Potts, the President of the Thames Miners' Union, leaves for the Ohincinuri district, whero lie wilt confer at Waihi with the district representatives of the Thames Miners' Union regarding the matters in dispute between the miners and the Waihi Company. Mr Potts will remain at Wuilii until next Monday, and will attend the meeting to be held sit Waihi on Saturday to discuss the action of the Waihi Company in dismissing'certain .of its employees and the notion to be taken by the Miners' Union on behalf of (die miners.
While at Kitrangahnke . Mr Potts will also confer with local representatives regarding a strike which has occurred on the co-operative railway tunnel works. A telegram forwarded to him yesterday stated that the tunnel workmen had struck on account of the wages received for the past month's work being at the rate of 4s 5d per day—a sum deemed inadequate by the workmen. The Premier', who had been informed by telegram of the occurrence, has ordered inquiry to be made, and Mr Tregeur, of the Government- Labour Bureau, who is at .present in Waihi, has been instituted to conduct the investigation. In this lie will be assisted by Mr Potts, and it is hoped tlmt an amicable and satisfactory settlement of the difficulty will be arrived at. . The Waihi miners have unanimously passed the following resolutions: —"That the members of this (Waihi) branch of the Thames Miners' Union are satisfied that the men dismissed from the employ of the Waihi Gold Mining Company have l'oceivcd dismissal on account of their connection and position held in the Waihi branch of the Thames Miners' Union." "That the action of the committee following the dismissal of the members of the Miners' Union is hereby endorsed." "That Mr. Jackson Palmer, M.H.R., be rcq.uesl.ed in conjunction with Mr W. H. Potts, President of the Thames Miners' Union, to approach the management of the Waihi Gold Mining Company to request the reinstatement of the miners and battery hands who have been victimised."
