COSTLY MISTAKE OF A NEW SOUTH WALES SENTRY.

An unusual notification! is made in connection with the zeal of a sentry of, the N.S.W, Medical Corps at Orange River camp. It runs: "No. 49, Private Thomas Henry Norris, New South . Wales Army Medical Corps,, was tried by a district courts martial, held at Orange River, South Africa^ on Janury 19, for insubordination, and sentenced to eighty-four days' imprisonment, with hard labor." From advices received by post ■it would appear that the man was on sentry-go, when two men approached the- camp. They were promptly challenged, but did not take thi trouble to reply properly. The sen try again challenged, and;.on receiv ing an unsatisfactory reply, fired. On man was killed and the other wound cd. The sentry Vaa court-martiallet and sentenced to six months' imprit onment, with hard labor,, which wo reduced to eighty-four days, anc later, altogether remitted. His dut; was, of course, to call out the guard and give the men in charge, not shoe them "on sight."
