During the fight around Santiago, the Spanish sharpshooters perched in trees near the trenches.

They used smokeless powder and did much execution.

They aimed principally at the American officers, killing and wound* ing many. Some of the companies were completely depleted of officers. A smart naval engagement has taken place off Manzanillo between three American gunboats and nine Spanish ships, the latter being chiefly mercantile vessel* improvised as warships. One of the gunboats was disabled, and two Spanish ships sunk. Madrid, July 5.

Senor Sagasta, in the course of aa interview, said Spain would never surrender Cuba while she bad 100,000 volunteers ready to die in defence of the island.-
