Kauri Gum Commission's Report.

(Per Press Association,) Wellington, March 26. The Kauri Gum Commission reports . that up to last year the industry had yielded over eight millions oi money, and contributed nothing to the revenue of the country, although the soil was destroyed and a large expenditure necessitated on roads. Gorse could be grown for sheep, and the commission suggests that diggers be unallowed to burn off more than a square chain of fern and scrub at a time. The A.ustrians on the field are described as hardy, sober, and industrious, and who from their knowledge of vine and olive culture would make good settlers if they stayed. Plenty of them earn £3 to £4 per week. The Commission recommendthat.no one, unless he be a settler, be allowed to hold a gum digger's license till after 12 months residence in the colony. An export duty should be imposed of £3 to £5; per ton. and no holder of a publican's license should be allowed to deal in gum.
