WAIHI SECURES FIFTH PLACE.
NyiPißß, January 28. The band contest concluded late last night with a test piece, ten band's competing. The playing of the Wellington Garrison was again a distinct feature, and there was no doubt in the minds of the public as to the winners. The announcement of the result was j awaited with intense interest by the audience, which packed the theatre in every part, although it was just on 12 o'clock when the result was knownaggregate (test piece and own choice selection) : Wellington Garrison, 154, Ist; Wanganui Garrison and Tupp's Band, 138, tie ; Napier Garrison, 136, 4th; Waihi, 133, sth; Palmerston North, 128, 6th; Napier City, 126, 7th; Canterbury Engineers, 120, Bth; Feilding and- Woodville, 118, tie.
The Wellington Garrison secure Beeeon's shield, and Boosey's cornet for the best leading cornet test piece, and Mr Herd, the conductor, a silver mounted baton for the band, scoring the most points, The Wellington Garrison's successes are extremely popular. • ' ' Later. At the annual meeting of the N»rth Island Band Association, Mr C\ fa m was elected president, The next contest was fixed to take place at Palmerston.
