POLICE COURT.
Before A. Bruce, Esq.., J.P.
Alleged Assault.
Frederick Lough was charged with wounding one Arthur Innes, thereby doing him grievous bodily harm, at Omahu on 22nd March.
Mr Miller appeared for the accused. Sergeant Gillies said that the accused had only just been arrested, and the police had not had time to get the full particulars. Ftoni what he had learnt, however, it appeared that a meeting of settlers had been called by a man named Arthur Innes, who resided at Omahu. After the meeting, at which the accused was present, an altercation took place at the schoolhouse, Omahu, where the meeting was held," between accused and Innes, which culminated in either blows or a wrestling match. The accused fell down during the scuffle, but immediately got up again, and seizing an Indian club, hit Innes on the head. Innes, who was knocked insensible, had been taken to the Hospital. Innes was no better yet, and as the wound was serious, the doctor could not yet say how it would end. Under the circumstances, he would ask for a remand until Friday. The Bench granted the remand, as asked for.
Mr Miller asked that accused should be admitted to bail.
Sergeant Gillies said that if the injured man had recovered consciousness he would have had no objection to bail being granted, but as he had not, and the wound was serious, he would feel it his duty to oppose bail being granted. The Bench said there appeared to be no reason why bail should not be granted. Sergeant Gillies a3ked that the bail should be made substantial.
The Bench granted bail, accused in £50, and two sureties of £50 each.
