THE AUCKLAND CARNIVAL.
Speaking of the Auckland Amateur Club's Carnival the Herald says:— " The track wag of course somewhat heavy, and tog ether with the stiff southeaster that was blowing, put all prospects of fast times out of the question, yet the sports were admittedly of a most interesting character, and quite as good as could be expected under the ch'cumstances. The features of the day were of course the pole-jump contest and the Five Mile Bicycle Handicap for the Enfield Challenge Cup. In the former the native Hori Eruera, of the Parnell Native School, succeeded in establishing a fresh Australasian record of 11 feet, a truly magnificent performance, and four inches better than the previous record of JlO feet 8 inches, held by Kingsley of Wauganui. Reynolds' win in the Eufield Challenge Cup race of five miles, was undoubtedly a fine performance, and the champion is to be complimented on becoming the possessor of this fine trophj, which becomes his personal property, he having won it twice in succession. The club's ''Victor Ludorum," which went to pedestrians, was earned off by H. G. Thomson, who won the 100 yds Handicap and ran second in the 300 yds and 440 yds handicaps. His win was a well deserved one, he running with great dash and determination. Bowser proved himself undoubtedly the best sprinter in Auckland " In the pole-jump there were three competitors—Hori Eruera, Jas. Te Paa and R. D. Mins. The jumping was started at 9ft. 3in., with a view to a probable record, and in this respect the spectators were not disappointed. Hori Eruera, who is a fine athleticlooking young native, was in good form and soon ran the crossbar up to 1 Oft. 9in., an inch better than that of the Australasian recoid of 10ft. Bin., held by Kingsley. It was then rua up to j lift., which he succeeded inthegoti-j ating after a couple of attempts. On the fact being made known, the champion was given three ringing cheers. %■" j
