Auckland, Mai'ch 10.

BALGROVE'S FREEHOLD.

A rise has been put up from the 200 ft level crosscut in this mine to connect with the surface winze which was originally sunk some years ago by tributers upon a reef outcropping on the side of the spur, but was abandoned. It was rumored that the lode had carried gold in it, and the present company, with a view to testing the truth of this theory, proceeded to clear omb and re-timber this winze. The result has been most gratifying to oil concerned, for in carrying out this woik the reef was exposed and proved to be a most likely body of stone. In further testing the reef more encouraging prospects presented themselves, and at the present time a splendid tail of gold can be obtained in the dish, whilst colors are visible through the stone.

STAB OF TOEATEA. A start was made some time ago to carry into effect a scheme of operations laid down by Mr J. Riley, surveyor and mining engineer, who located a number of reefs traversing the claim. The level crosscut driven to cut the Pretty Jane reef is now in over 100 ft, and is penetrating a good class of country, but so far the reef has not miide its appearance. A new level has now been started, having for its object the prospecting of the Alexandiasection of the mine at a point below the level of that name. Mr C. Blasch who" is in chargs of operations, is pushing ahead the works in a vigorous manner. SOUTHERN MINING.
