Harbour Master's Report.-" Work during February has been of various kinds. Early in the month we constructed the barricade to go across the wharf. It has been used on two occasions sine, and has answered its purpose very we]]. Since that time a new shed has been erected on the Shortland Wharf arid opened for traffic and handed over to the Northern Steamship Company in place of the old shed, which would not bear.repairs, -and has been sold for removal, Mr Ashby having delivered the piles ordered for repairs to Goods and Shortland Wharves, I have had those required at Shoi tland stacked ready for use and as soon as the old thxl is removed I will start the repairs there and shift the coal shed down fp, the new goods shed. I have driven five piles alopgside those where the T«rranprh lies, and expect to have them secured and be able to shift all the sear down to Shortland this week. Mr Gorman,, representing the Explosive Company, called upon me this morning with a request that another ventilator might be put in the powder magazine. Since we nutted the magazine* by taking all the powder racks, etc. out, the case goods stow much closer, and consequently interfere with th« side ventilation, and he recommends what myself and Mr Gubb, the raaga* zinc keeper, cousideiel ought to have been erected while the alterations were being m»^f| vis., a torpedo ventilator on tbo roof. The cost of an 8-inch one fixed in position would be about £3, and as the magazine is very stuffy for want of greater ventilation I think it should be done. I beg to call your Board's attention to the fact that now extensive repairs are going on, and in the near future the extension of the wharf, that my work has'very considerably increased, consequently most of my book-keeping has to be done late iv the evening. I shall be glad If ycur Board wi}l consider giving me £Qme clerical assistance, If I have to take the supervision of. the wharf extension this will be necessary, as my work will then be mostly outside, and the office work takes up a very considerable amount of time. Making out the wharfage accounts and collecting then is my greatest loss of time, and I think this might be done tc greater advantage. I shall 1)3 glad if your Board ..will take this into consideration. 'Revenue collected iiYFebruary : General, £ 191 17s lid; pilotage, £U 17s; total, £2Q3 U* 1H H —H was decided that the recommendation for the ventilation be adopted and that the lu&iter of clerical assistance be considered by the Finance Committee.
