MINING NEWS.

(By Our Special Reportor.)

VICTORIA

The various works at the different levels in this mine are being steadily carried on, and beyond the fact that high grade ore is being met. with in the intermediate drive below No. 2 level, there is really nothing new to mention. The crushing in progress at the May Queen Extended battery is shaping much -better than the previous parcel, and the return will probably come to hand early next week. WHANGAMATA. Development work is being actively carried on in this centre, but so far there ; are no new discoveries to chronicle. The Whangamata Proprietary company are conducting extensive opening up works, and the lode they Lave in hand is receiving! thorough exploiting. The results met with so far are considered highly satisfactory.

The Ptolemy company, which is held under option, is being systematically opened up by the holders of the option. As the: property joins the Luck at Last on the!north, it is thought that equally as good results will be obtained there as are being met with by the present company. The country and general surroundings are all that could be desired, and no doubt as the development work proceeds something of importance will be revealed.

A large amount of prospecting work is being vigorously carried on in the Mikado mine, which is also under option. This area joins the Luck at Last on the south, but so far nothing of an important nature has been met with.

The Inca company is also opening opening up very extensively, and with very encouraging results. The lodes are large, and carry a very fair prospect of gold, whilst very good assays have also been obtained. a At what is known as Upper Whan- ; gamata, the mines carrying on developI ment work are in some instances I meeting with encouraging results. The Golden Mount, being developed by the ! Bewick-Moreing Co. is meeting with [an immense amount of low grode ©re, but so far nothing of any very great importance has been revealed. The Flemington, Sybil, Tamahana, j and Moa companies are actively developing their various lodes. The same remark applies to the Three Star, Wairoa, lolanthe, My Sweetheart, j Rothschi'd, Prince Charlie,\Ventworth, ] Whangamata King, Herald, and Marco Polo, all of which are responsible for extensive exploratory works, but so far nothing of any very great value has been uncovered, of these mines, notably tho Wentworth and Prince Charlie, have very fair shows, and may with further work prove important mines. WOODSTOCK. News from Paeroa states that the "Woodstock battery is working very smoothly, although there has been the usual number of stoppages incidental in starting any new mill, such as belts getting slack, stampers loosening, etc. On Thursday morning some difficulty was experienced witli the ore con- ; veyors, but this was remedied, and in the afternoon everything went splendidly. LEADING WIND. j The directors of the Leading wind (Manaia) have declined an offer to work the mine on tribute. It is stated I that a gentleman lecently arrived from England is about to visit the pro- ! perty with a view to securing an option over it. Mr Wm. Thomas, senior, has been added to the directorate. OHINEMURI SYNDICATE. \ Mr Thomas Russell has just completed pa. examination of the above Company's property. The Company is determined to sink a good permanent shaft through all ohstazles, and are making room for additional boilers should they be required. The shaft will probably be sunk a distance of 150 ft before opening out, although even now, at 25ft down, good standstone country is in the bottom.

COROMANDEL PROPERTIES.

The Star's Coromandel correspondent wires :—"The pumping engine of the Kathleen Crown was started yesterday by Mr Cecil Hartridge, when everything was found to work satisfactorily and smoothy in the mine. Important developments are taking place in the Argall lode. This reef is 12 inches in thickness and has been opened up by a surface level some distance. Yesterday on breaking down some of the stone was tested, when phenomenally rich prospects of coarse gold were obtained in the dish. This is most gratifying, and should be the runner only of still further encouraging developments. Yesterday in the Golden Pah mine an important find was made. The old 80ft level, which was worked some years ago, and from which several small but rich crushing? were obtained had been cleared out and retimbered by the Golden Pah Company, and driving had since been proceeding- on the level. The stone"has-'edrttrttenced to show strong daW andiilotches of gold. This will be systematically exploited-

WAIHI SILVERTON

[BY TELI&BIPH.—OWN COBBESPOITDEirr.]

Auckland, March 5.

At a meeting of the Auckland Sharebrokers' Association yesterday attention was drawn to the fact that the colonial shareholders in the Waihi Silverton Co. had received no notißcation of the new issue of shares in London until several days ago, when they were informed by circular that shareholders on the books of the com pany on the 19th January, 1897. were entitled to the new issue of shares, Several members expressed themselves that in all cases of a new issue of shares and in other important matters affecting shareholders due notice ought to be given to colonial holders, instead of them being practically ignored. On the motion of Mr Hull, seconded by Mr Frater, it was resolved "That Silverton shares sold after 19tlr January, 1897, be not entitled to the the new issue of shares unless special arrangements were made to the contrary. ROYAL SHIELD. At a meeting of shareholders of the Kdyal- Shield (Wharekeraupunga) thi& .intoning resolutions were passed authorising the directors to sell the property
