The Federal Election.
(Per Press Association.)
Sydney, March 5. The polling day for the federal elections yeaterday was observed as a holiday. The elections passed off quietly throughout the colonies. The latest returns show the following to be the leading candidates: — Messrs Barton, Carruthers, McMillan, Reid, Lyne, R. B. O'Connor, Sir J. Abbott, Walker and Wise (the last two having replaced Oopeland and Lee as further returns came in). About 140 small returns are still to come in but it is almost certain Cardinal Moran has little chance of being included among the ten. Melbourne, March 5. The following ten will probably be elected:—The Premier (Mr Turner), Dr. Quick, and Messrs Peacock, Isaacs, Deakin, Trenwith, Eraser, Higgins, Sir Gh Berry and Sir W. Zeal.
