Wellesley-street School.

Auckland, March 2.

At the ordinary meeting of the City Schools Committee last evening, Mr Blades presiding, the question of the appointment of head master of the Wellesley-street School was again brought up.

Mr Blades read a letter from the Board of Education, supplying the Committee with the names of the whole of the applications for the position of head master of the Wellesleystreet School. The Board further expressed the opinion that the vacancy must be filled up as -soon as possible. Mr Blades quoted from a judgment delivered against the Otago Education Board, to the effect that committees must always be consulted re appointments, suspensions, and dismissals of teachers. If the matter were carried to the law courts, the committee could force the Board to submit the names and particulars of all the twenty-three teachers who had applied. However, he had no desire to see the Committee engage in litigation.

Mr R. Farrell moved that the Committee proceed to elect a headmaster from the eleven names submitted by the Board.

Mr Julian moved as an amendment, "That the Committee adhere to its previous resolution asking for fuller information concerningthecandidates." Mr Farrell's motion was carried, and the Committee then proceeded to consider the 11 names previously submitted by the Board, in order to select a headmaster.

The Chairman read the reports of the inspectors and credentials of the eleven candidates submitted by the Board.

Mr Farrell moved, " That the Committee recommend the name of Mr R. D. Stewart, of Onehunga, to the Board of Education as the most suitable candidate for the position." Mr Fricker seconded the motion.

Mr Squirrel moved as an amendment, " That the name of Mr George Thvraites be submitted to the Poard."

Mr Crowe seconded the amendment,

Mr Squirrell read a telegram from Dr. King, a member of the Oommittee, stating that he was in favor of Mr Thwaites being selected. The amendment was lost, the voting being:—Ayes, Messrs Squirrell and Crowe; noes, Messrs Fairs, Farrell, Julian, Fricker, and Adams.

The motion that Mr Stewart's name be sent to the Board was then carried.
